Working with Words Lists for May
-we will be working on polysyllabic words with prefixes and suffixes. These words are called Nifty Thrifty Fifty (NTF) words. Each month we will study more NTF words. Learning how to break down the morphemes of big words will help with decoding the new words we are finding in our textbooks.
Nifty Thrifty Fifty Words
We have introduced all of the NTF words for this year. We will now review and practice using these words.
-we will also work on high-frequency, priority words. These words are part of about 100 words which make up about 50% of what people read and write daily. Many of these words have irregular spellings, which can make them confusing and difficult to remember. There are lots of homophones on this list (for example; there, their, and they're).
High-Frequency Words
- anyone
- getting
- hole
- terrible
- thought
- trouble
- weather
- were
- whether
- whole
-once we have studied a word it will be added to our Word Wall. Those words are then expected to be spelled correctly every time the word is used. If parents notice WW written beside a word on graded assignments, that word is a Word Wall word, was spelled incorrectly, and the student has been asked to correct their spelling. This makes these words "No Excuse" words!
-we will have periodic Word Wall quizzes. This will assess student mastery and maintenance of the words we are studying. These quizzes will be unannounced.
-students are welcome to keep a portable Word Wall in their take-home folder. They can then refer to that for their writing and assignments at home.
-spelling grades will be taken from Working with Words assignments, spelling on writing assignments, and Word Wall quizzes.
